Double Entry Journal # 6

Quote

"Advocates of digital media education agree that reading online demands different skills than reading print-only texts does (David)."

Response

After reading the article, I stopped to think about how I read when I read both print-based works and online articles. I have never really put it into consideration that I might read each differently. However, after thinking about this, I realized that I do. I was shocked to find out how I treat something completely different without even acknowledging that I had done so. I found an article that relates to the different reading styles between online and print materials. Jack Shafer describes his experience with reading each differently. After cancelling his NY Times subscription to use the online version, he quickly realized that he wasn’t gaining as much information and reinstated his subscription. I completely agree with Shafer in the fact that although it may be more convenient to read online at times, you may not be gaining all of the knowledge that is offered in the print portion.

Revised Reflection Voki

After reading and listening to my reflection out loud, I realized how lengthy and boring my reflection was. There were a couple sentences that I deleted all together. Also, there were a few sentences that I combined and re-worded. One of the sentences that I re-worded was "Before students begin to create a digital story, they must first create an idea, draw storyboards, and make choices of the content they would like to use." I believe that my reflection is now easier to read and more enjoyable.

Voki

Unnecessary Words

Throughout my reflection, I found 9 different uses of the word "that". After reading through the reflection, I deleted the word 6 times. This left only 3 uses of the word "that". I did not find any uses of the word "really" or "just". I did not find any uses of passive voice in my reflection.

Double Entry Journal #5

The difference between Media in Education and Media Literacy Education is that Media in Education is the use of media to entertain or instruct and Media Literacy Education is using media to teach a specific topic to students.

The social bargain that is at the heart of Fair Use is cultural value.

Fair Use is more important today than ever before because it protects works for longer periods of time. "Creators face new challenges: licenses to incorporate copyrighted sources become more expensive and more difficult to obtain—and sometimes are simply unavailable."

The two key questions that judges use to determine Fair Use are "Did the unlicensed use “transform” the material taken from the copyrighted work by using it for a different purpose than that of the original, or did it just repeat the work for the same intent and value as the original and was the material taken appropriate in kind and amount, considering the nature of the copyrighted work and of the use?"

If a teacher shows the movie The Lion King and asks her students to notice how the animals in the movie reflect racial stereotypes she is using Fair Use. As long as the teacher is not using the movie for personal gain and is using this to allow her students to have a better understanding of the content that she is trying to teach, she is using Fair Use.

Principle five, developing audiences for student work, best relates to the digital story that I created in class. This principle explains the way that students are expected to behave with as digital story makers.

The determination of whether or not a person needs to request permission from the original creator in order to use copyrighted material in a multimedia project for a school related assignment relies on how the amount and length of the product being used.

I believe that educators should attempt to change the policies within their schools if they are not in line with the Fair Use doctrine. Fair Use can better help educators in furthering their students’ education.

The myth that surprised me the most about Fair Use is that Fair Use could get me sued. I have always been told by my educators that they are not aloud to use copyrighted materials within the classroom because of legal issues.

The digital story that I created falls under Fair Use. The reasoning for this is as long as the material that I have created is being used to help someone better educate himself or herself or someone else, it is Fair Use. As long as the person using my digital story does not have personal gain, it is Fair Use.

Double Entry Journal # 4

Quote

"Creating a digital story taps skills and talents -- in art, media production, story telling, project development, and so on -- that might otherwise lie dormant within many students but that will serve them well in school, work, and in expressing themselves personally."

Response

I truly believe that digital story telling is a wonderful new application that teachers can use to help their students express their knowledge in a different and new way. Digital storytelling allows students to better enhance many skills that they would normally never use. I chose the above quote because I agree that children do not properly use many skills available to them. The photo that I  have chosen for this article is a description of many different skills that are used while using digital storytelling. Although digital storytelling is an application that many people do not understand how to use, it is very user-friendly and easy to learn. If teachers would take the time to learn these new technologies, students would benefit from the new skills available to them!

Research Based Instructional Strategy

I chose to read tha article about note-taking strategies. When students are told to do research and take notes, they usually become bored and not excited about learning. However, Roger Hamilton designed his course around the students and their interests. In today's world, technology has over-powered the pen and paper. When studnets are told to write a research paper, they are supposed to use a computer to type the information. However, when they are taking notes and finding information for their research paper, the only option available to them is to use a pen and a piece of paper to jot down their ideas. Hamilton decided to change how his classroom would take notes and designed a wiki application for them to do research and take notes electronically. By using the wiki to take notes, the students were able to review, revise, and update their notes when needed.

I feel that by creating a new idea for his students to take notes, he allowed his students to become more involved and interested in what they were researching. The times have changed and technology has become more prevelant than ever. If students are using technology for every other aspect of their daily lives, why shouldn't they use it to take notes and do research? Students will become more intereseted in note-taking and will use this technique more often then they would with a pen and a piece of paper!

Double Entry Journal #3

Quote

"Depending on our pedagogical goals, we might choose to be linguistically hard-nosed (perhaps pluralizing the noun to friends and avoiding the gender question entirely). Or we might admit more casual spoken style into the classroom, following the general trend today for writing to reflect informal speech."

Response

I chose this quote because I felt that it would speak to a teacher in a way that would allow him or her to decide how they want their classroom atmosphere to be portrayed. The quote describes to the audience that by not allowing students to express themselves in the way technology has taught them, they are not fully allowing students to exhibit all of their capabilities. Before reading the articles given, I found myself as being one of the people who believed text messaging was only for recreational purposes. However, after reading the articles, I realized that text messages have allowed students many learning opportunities. I know believe that text messages should be used within a classroom for educational purposes to further help a child's education. With the supervision of a teacher and the help from parents at home, text messaging could become a positive in many aspects instead of being a negative!

Learning Styles and Preferences

Learning styles do exist. However, a learning style does not specifically define how a person learns material. The type of content that is trying to be taught determines the way a person learns. Learning styles can become relativly unimportant in some learning categories while they play a prevelant role in others.

When a teacher attempts to teach material to a class, learning styles become irrelavent. It is nearly impossible for a teacher to instruct a classroom using all three learning styles in a manner that will help the studnets understand the content more easily. Classroom instruction should be thought of as using the best method to teach a certain material. Each material being taught inside of a classroom has a specific way that it is best learned.

The best philosphy for using learning styles is to structure the material to be taught in a way that can be best understood by each student. Learning styles should not be used in a way to label students. Instead it should be a preference of each student on how they prefer to learn.
