Double Entry Journal #2

Quote

"According to many researchers, children can learn more effectively when they play video games than when they read books."

Response

After reading the article, I was shocked to find that many students learn more by playing video games than from reading a book. Although I find this hard to believe, I think it could be a possibility. Although many students love to play video games, they are not properly taught how to play them. Many children like to play video games that are violent and uneducational. If students were taught to play educational video games that could help them learn, then the possiblity of using a video game as a learning tool could be understandable.

After reading an article from CBC News, I realized the importance of video games. Millions of households have some type of video game console inside of their home. Also, video games teach children multi-tasking, problem-solving, and engagement skills.

Picasso Head and Learning Style

After completing the Learning Styles survey, I found out that I am an auditory learner. This means that I comprehend more information by listening than I do by seeing or feeling. Technology has greatly helped my learning style by making more things available. Some of the technologies that help auditory learners include ipods, mp3 players, and tape recorders. Each of these items can be useful by downloading study material on to them and listening to the feedback with the earphones.

Old Vs. New Education

Quote

"What if, indeed. After studying the matter, Ms. Davidson concluded, “Online blogs directed at peers exhibit fewer typographical and factual errors, less plagiarism, and generally better, more elegant and persuasive prose than classroom assignments by the same writers” (Heffernan, 2011)."

Response

Before this class, I  had no previous knowledge of how to use a blog. However, after playing with the different things that are offered within a blog, I discovered that this technology is not scary to use at all. In fact, blogs are much more easy to work with than any other application that I have used to do other assignments. The quote that I chose deals with students and their inability to produce a well-written assignment. In today's society, I believe that students care less about pen and paper and more about the internet. Sadly though, teachers still thrive on assigning students to do research that only comes from a paper book and writing research papers that are twenty pages long. If a teacher wants her students to succeed in today's world, he or she needs to make an assignment that will engage the students. Today students are engaged by how fast they can locate information on the internet and then give their input on that information.

This video exhibits Cathy Davidson and David Goldberg's views on the ability of students to better learn by using the technology available to them.

Introduction

Hi everyone! My name is Lindsey Rome and I am currently a junior in the Education Program. My specialization is in business. I am a graduate of Robert C. Byrd High School and have lived in Clarksburg/Bridgeport, WV my entire life. After graduating from FSU with my Education degree, I hope to find a job within a middle or high school.

I believe that each child learns in his or her own special way. Not every child can learn in the same way. Some children learn best by example and some learn best by trial and error. Once I begin teaching, I plan to use different teaching techniques to help children learn. I will use many different types of technology to engage children in learning. Ipads, Ipods, computers, cell phones, and other technologies will help enhance this project.
